Abstract

The Contextual Circumstance of the Addressee in Rhetorical Science and Its Impact on Meaning in Ibn Ashur’s Tafsir.

Abstract
This study aims to examine the contextual circumstance of the addressee in rhetorical science and how it influences the interpretation of Qur'anic verses, through Ibn Ashur’s tafsir Al-Tahrir wa al-Tanwir (The Liberation and Illumination). The contextual circumstance of the addressee is one of the important non-verbal indicators that helps in determining the intended meaning of speech. Scholars, especially Ibn Ashur, have utilized this clue to clarify the profound meanings of Qur'anic verses and to direct understanding according to the addressee's situation.
I analyzed the contextual circumstance of the addressee in Ibn Ashur’s tafsir using an inductive analytical method. I found that Ibn Ashur referenced this clue in certain issues related to rhetorical science. Its function varies according to the topics addressed, which is why this research and study are specifically dedicated to this clue. I have assigned each topic within the field of rhetorical science, where Ibn Ashur used the contextual circumstance of the addressee, an independent title, along with an explanation of how it was utilized, its role in the issues, and the impact of the contextual clue on the interpretation.
