Abstract

This study clarifies the reasons behind the limited number of critical evaluations of ḥadīth transmitters attributed to Imām al-Shāfiʿī, despite his distinguished status in the sciences of the Sunnah, to the extent that he was known in his time as “the Defender of the Sunnah.” The study challenges those who assume that al-Shāfiʿī held a lower rank in ḥadīth scholarship compared to Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal, Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd al-Qaṭṭān, or ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Mahdī. It examines the influence of historical period, geographical setting, and authorial objectives on this perception, employing an analytical methodology to reach its findings. Among the most significant conclusions is that al-Shāfiʿī deemed the ḥadīth transmissions he received from the Ḥijāzī scholars sufficient, without feeling the need to seek additional reports from others.
