Abstract

Features of Al-Marhūmī’s Approach in His Marginal Notes on Al-Iqnāʿ by Al-Khaṭīb Al-Shirbīnī

This study presents a description of the marginal notes written by the scholar Al-Marhūmī on the book Al-Iqnāʿ by Al-Khaṭīb Al-Shirbīnī, which remains in manuscript form to this day. The study includes a biographical account of Al-Marhūmī, highlighting his expertise in the Shāfiʿī school of thought, which is clearly evident through his commentary. It also notes his prominent role in teaching the madhhab at Al-Azhar Mosque. The study outlines Al-Marhūmī’s methodology and style in his marginal notes, and it concludes with several findings. Among the most notable features of Al-Marhūmī’s commentary is his attention to obscure terms, his clarification of their proper pronunciation, and his referencing of the authoritative positions within the madhhab—an especially valuable trait for students of Shāfiʿī jurisprudence, particularly in cases involving legal differences.
