A Historical and Analytical Study of Mahmoud Muhammad Shakir’s Position on Orientalism

Abstract

Professor Mahmoud Mohammed Shaker is widely recognized by historians of intellectual and scientific movements as one of the most prominent and rigorous critics of Orientalism, its intellectual legacy, and its cultural ramifications. This study seeks to address a central research question: What methodology did Professor Shaker employ in his critique of the Orientalist corpus? The paper aims to elucidate the formative role of Shaker’s cultural and intellectual environment, his depth of understanding regarding the historical context, epistemological foundations, and methodological tools of Orientalism, as well as his analytical approach to Orientalist writings and the constructive responses he proposed. Through a comprehensive examination of Shaker’s works and an analytical reading of his discourse on Orientalism, the study concludes that Shaker’s environment significantly contributed to his critical awareness of the phenomenon. His engagement was marked by scholarly rigor and methodological clarity, enabling him to formulate effective strategies to counter the influence of Orientalism on Arab intellectual and cultural identity.
