Abstract

This study examines the position of the reformist exegete Jamal al-Din al-Qasimi regarding the issue of the crucifixion of Jesus (peace be upon him), as referenced in the Qur'anic verse:
“They did not kill him, nor did they crucify him, but it was made to appear so to them” (An-Nisa: 157).
The paper compares al-Qasimi’s interpretation with those of classical commentators such as al-Tabari, al-Razi, Ibn Kathir, and al-Qurtubi, highlighting al-Qasimi’s distinctive approach that integrates both textual and rational evidence, and applies critical scrutiny to transmitted narratives, particularly rejecting unverified Isra’iliyyat and fabricated reports.

The study also explores several modern reinterpretations of the crucifixion narrative—most notably, the Ahmadi (Qadiani) view, modernist symbolic readings, and orientalist critiques. It demonstrates that al-Qasimi’s commentary provides a robust scholarly foundation for responding to these claims, through his close textual analysis of the Qur'an, his logical argumentation, and his prudent handling of theological ambiguities.

The research concludes that Jamal al-Din al-Qasimi offers a balanced and academically rigorous model in addressing complex theological questions, bridging classical Islamic scholarship with the demands of modern discourse. His interpretation remains a valuable reference in interfaith dialogue and in defending Qur'anic integrity against misreadings and doctrinal distortions.
