Abstract

This study examines Ibn Hajar al-Haytami's critique, in his book "Tuhfat al-Muhtaj," of al-Fayruzabadi's method of including legal definitions or meanings in his dictionary "al-Qamus al-Muhit." This practice, as al-Haytami points out, leads many to mistakenly believe these definitions are merely linguistic. The research analyzes al-Haytami's critique of al-Fayruzabadi on this issue using inductive, analytical, and deductive methods. The study arrives at several conclusions, including: that al-Haytami's critique of al-Fayruzabadi was valid and justified; that the apologies offered by commentators to al-Fayruzabadi are also valid, although al-Haytami's point about the necessity of al-Fayruzabadi including legal definitions is preferable; that al-Fayruzabadi's inclusion of legal definitions is a recurring practice in his dictionary; and that al-Haytami's praise of the author of "al-Sahih" was well-founded, as he rarely failed to include legal definitions.
