Abstract

This study addresses the topic of the explicitly stated ʿIlal (legal causes) found in the ahādīth of legal rulings from Bulūgh al-Marām, and the extent to which the legal ruling is influenced by the fundamental cause (ʿillah uṣūlīyah). The reasoning behind juristic rulings holds great importance, as it reveals the objectives of the Sharīʿah, uncovers the wisdom of legislation, affirms that the Sharīʿah was revealed to safeguard the interests of the legally accountable in both this world and the Hereafter, establishes proof against those who dissent, and provides further reassurance to those who concur.

The purpose of studying the science of ʿIlal (legal causes) is to understand the methods of deriving rulings from the Sharīʿah evidences. A scholar or student cannot truly comprehend the wisdom and objectives of legislation unless they study this science with conscious, profound, and thorough engagement, combining both rational and transmitted knowledge. The science of ʿIlal (legal causes) belongs to the realm of rational knowledge, while legal rulings fall within the realm of transmitted knowledge. Imām al-Ghazālī stated: “The most noble of sciences are those in which reason and revelation are joined together, in which opinion accompanies law; the science of jurisprudence and its principles are of this kind.”
