Al-Sanani's Critical Remarks on Imam al-Tirmidhi in Al-Tahbir li-Idah Ma'ani al-Taysir: A Critical Study
Research Summary
This study examines the critical remarks made by Imam Muhammad bin Ismail al-Amir al-Sanani (d. 1182 AH) on Imam al-Tirmidhi in his book Al-Tahbir li-Idah Ma'ani al-Taysir. The research addresses the need to collect these scattered remarks, clarify their nature, and analyze them in order to highlight al-Sanani’s critical methodology and their scholarly value in hadith studies.
The researcher adopted an inductive approach to identify and gather the remarks, followed by analytical and critical methods to interpret and evaluate them. The study found that the total number of remarks is nine: five textual remarks related to wording accuracy and contextual clarification, and four evaluative remarks related to al-Tirmidhi’s judgments on the authenticity and grading of hadiths.
The findings show that al-Sanani was correct in eight of these remarks. His valid remarks focused on correcting the hadith texts, clarifying historical events, and directing or reassessing al-Tirmidhi’s rulings. The study highlights al-Sanani’s balanced and rigorous critical approach, which relies on examining chains of transmission, identifying hidden defects, and verifying textual precision. This makes his work a valuable contribution to applied hadith criticism.
