Abstract

The critical methodology developed by hadith scholars is considered the most precise among critical approaches in evaluating the transmitters of reports. Hadith scholars examined all possible factors that could be relied upon to determine the status of a narrator and to pass judgment on him, and consequently to judge his narration as acceptable or rejectable. It became well established among hadith scholars that a narrator must be free from violations of muru’ah (personal integrity and propriety) in order for his uprightness (‘adālah) to be affirmed and his narration accepted. This condition was therefore regarded as one of the essential qualifications of a narrator whose reports are accepted.

This study aims to uncover the reasons why hadith scholars considered violations of muru’ah among the conditions of uprightness, especially since most such violations originally fall within the category of permissible actions. The study demonstrates the aspects of the relationship between a narrator’s involvement in a violation of muru’ah and the rejection of his narration, suspension of judgment regarding it, or exercising caution toward it. It also addresses the claim raised by some researchers that there is no clear evidence that hadith scholars rejected a narrator’s narration solely due to a violation of muru’ah. The study shows that the hadith scholars’ treatment of violations of muru’ah was based on a practical methodological approach in evaluating narrators.walqarayin alati tastaghriq lilhadthi
