Abstract

This study strives to reveal the manifestations of the presence of the city of Jerusalem before the Nakba of 1948, as depicted by the Palestinian writer Mahmoud Shuqair in the novel (The Family Horse) through a narrative structure that opposes the narrative of the occupation. It is based on evoking an imagined Bedouin tribe living near Jerusalem. The novel presents its engagement with this city and the transformations of its individuals - under its influence - on their levels of life. Social, political, intellectual, economic, and behavioral, and the novelist drew on his experience and historical, social, and cultural heritage to delineate them, as all of them are a basic reference background for his novelistic proposals.

The study intends - from a methodological aspect - to read the novel with a social critical approach, by tracing the path of various inevitable transformations in the place, accompanied by transformations at the level of the characters, which makes it possible to sense literary representations of society with its various classes, conditions, and transformations, by describing literature as a manifestation of life at its collective level.
