Abstract

This paper observes the early English role in settling the Jews in Al-Quds and investigates the British formal and non-formal role therein. The British formal concern with the Jews in Al-Quds goes back to the year 1838 when Britain established a consulate in Al-Quds, while adopting various policies to impose a Jewish numerical superiority in the sacred city. The paper will also chronicle the history of the non-formal British role that rose through Men of finance and industry and the different British non-formal institutions,and the forerunner in this affair could be the Jerusalem Literary Society of 1849 which had been headed by Mr. Finn, the British consul in Al-Quds at that time. The Jews had concealed behind religious purposes to acquire sympathy and support from crowds of the Jews to dominate Palestine in general and Al-Quds in particular. The Zionist movement allied with the imperialistic circles, particularly  Britain who perceived the significance of Al-Quds in all aspects and hence exploited  the that movement to achieve its colonial interests in the Arabic region.
