The factors leading to terrorism from the perspective of deviance and crime specialty students

Abstract

This study aimed to identify the psychological, economic, technological, and political causes leading to terrorism from the perspective of deviance and crime specialty students, and identify whether there are statistically significant differences in the level of the factors leading to terrorism from the perspective of deviance and crime students in the faculty of Prince Rahma university college at Balqa Applied university attributed to the variables of gender, age, and academic year. The study used the analytical descriptive approach due to its compatibility to the objectives of this study. The study population consisted of deviance and crime specialty students in the faculty of Prince Rahma university college at Balqa Applied university with a total of (400) male and female students (department of admission and registration, the faculty of Prince Rahma university college at Balqa Applied University- As-Salt), whereas the study sample was selected by using the purposive random way and consisted of (167) respondents, (85.2%) of the original sample. The researcher developed the study instrument that consisted of three parts. The first part includes the demographic variables (gender, age, place of residence, academic year, work type, income level, political interest, affiliation to parties, and knowledge of terrorism). The second part includes the study questions, with (21) questions about the factors leading to terrorism, including the psychological factors (6 questions), economic factors (5 questions), technological factors (5 questions), and political factors (5 questions).

The results revealed that the psychological factors among terrorists have a high impact on their affiliation to terrorist groups, and that depression from which the youth suffer is the most important psychological factor leading to terrorism. The results revealed that the economic factors have a great importance concerning the youth direction towards terrorism, where unemployment had the highest effect, followed by the increased financial burdens. The results also showed that technology enhances reaching and monitoring other members, helps terrorists perform their work, and makes the process of detecting crimes electronically more difficult. The results revealed that the increased wars and political issues, the lack of political expression among the youth, and the lack of political freedom are amongst the most important causes leading to terrorism.

In the light of the results, the study recommended the necessity of conducting further studies about the terrorists in reform and rehabilitation centres to identify the causes leading the youth to affiliate to terrorist groups more accurately.
