Language and Identity: A Socio-cultural Study of the Novel "Red Birds"

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to examine the complex interplay of language and identity, based on the novel Red Birds written by Mohammed Hanif. From a socio-cultural perspective, it explores the roles of language in the construction and reconstruction of individual and collective selves, particularly in situations of conflict and displacement. The narrative links and intertwines the characters’ crises of self in the face of interference from foreign elements and the socio-political realities that define their lives. This research will also contribute knowledge on language and identity in the post-colonial world as it seeks to highlight the role of narratives in the construction of cultural identities in today’s society.
