Unveiling the Multifaceted Meanings of Cohesive Devices in Surat Al-Baqarah: A Semantic Analytical Study

Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate the cohesive devices that are utilized in Surat Al-Baqarah, the first chapter in the Holy Qur’an. These cohesive devices, including conjunctions, pronouns, ellipsis and lexical repetition, are used as connectors to link words, phrases and sentences and better understand the meaning of the verses in the Sura. The data of the study were collected and analyzed by adopting three exegeses and three different translations of the meaning of the Holy Qur'an, which are the translations of Sahih International, Yusuf Ali, and Pickthall, in addition to the exegeses of Tafsir Al-Jalalayn, Tafsir Ibn Kathir, and Tafsir Al-Qurtubi. The study findings unveil substantive meanings and clear interpretations when using cohesive devices, which indicates a significant impact of these devices on the meaning and the interpretation of the Sura. In addition, due to the sophisticated and deep nature of the language of the Holy Qur'an, the results emphasizes the impact of analyzing cohesive devices on the interpretation process and conveying meaning. The study suggested some recommendations that should be taken into consideration.
