Abstract

    This research aims to explore the theory of conversational implicature through examples of Arabic euphemism by addressing several questions: To what extent is there an intersection between traditional Arabic rhetoric studies and Grice's modern theory? How does the application of a contemporary pragmatic concept contribute to the interpretation of communicative rhetorical phenomena in Arabic? This study applies a pragmatic approach to examples of euphemism found in Arabic rhetorical texts to uncover manifestations of the Cooperative Principle in conversational implicature, its characteristics, and its conditions within the rhetorical style of euphemism. Additionally, it aims to elucidate the pragmatic dimensions of euphemism in Arabic discourse. 

     The study concludes that euphemism functions as a conversational implicature, fulfilling its characteristics and conditions. The implicature meaning arises from the violation of one of the maxims of the Cooperative Principle. However, it is not feasible to generalize the violation of a specific maxim across all examples and models of euphemism. Identifying the violated maxim requires a pragmatic analysis of the expression within the context of discourse and cultural framework. Furthermore, a euphemistic expression may violate more than one of the maxims of the Cooperative Principle.
