Bulding and Standardizing a Measurement for Adaptive Behavior on a Sample of Palestinians with Mental Disability

The purpose of this study was to develop and standardize an adaptive behavior measurement on a sample of persons with mental disabilities in Palestine. The sample of the study comprised 1146 individuals, 1000 normal participants and 146 participants with mental disabilities, whose ages ranged from (0-10) years. The study sample comprised regular schools and rehabilitation centers in the north, middle and south of Palestine. To achieve the objectives of the study, an adaptive behavior measurement was developed consisting of 300 items. The data resulting from applying the scale were statistically analyzed using a set of appropriate methods and extracting psychometric properties. The validity of the content and differential validity were obtained, and the results of the analysis of variance showed that there were statistically significant differences at the level of significance α ≥ 0.05 attributed to the difference in the type of the case and were in favor of normal individuals. The results showed the development of adaptive behavior with years on the scale, and indications of construct validity were reached where the correlation coefficient reached 0.86. Also, indications of factor validity calculated with the root values underlying the explanation of the performance on the scale were available.
The reliability coefficients of the scale were obtained, which were calculated in four ways. The internal consistency method (Cronbach's alpha equation) where the values of the reliability coefficients ranged at 0.95. The method of Re-test (Test re-test) where the values of the stability coefficients ranged at 0.97. The Rates Agreement Method, which values ranged from 0.94, and finally suitable standard scores were obtained.
