The Role of Syntactic Approaches in Constructing Motives in Arabic

Abstract

This paper is concerned with  discussing one of the patterns of Arabic poetry, namely the subject of Motives. This had appeared in the pre-Islamic era in order to urge the addressees to revenge and strike back at those who wronged them, where the poet used to summon for this purpose the meanings and connotations affecting the recipient. The study aims at exploring the role played by emotional syntactic approaches in constructing these poems, showing how they contributed to enable the poet to communicate his emotions and feelings to the recipients in a stronger way in order to motivate them to revenge. This is applied according to the descriptive and analytical approach based on induction, and then clarifying and interpreting the phenomenon.

    The significance of this study lies in revealing the effective role of expressive linguistic methods in motivating the recipient to be convinced of the idea of revenge and repelling offense. It is also significant in highlighting the emotional and influential value of these approaches within a pattern of motivating poetry known to Arabs in our ancient heritage.

    The study is twofold, discussing the concept of Motives and its origin in Arabic, and the role of syntactic approaches in constructing Motives by reviewing the poetic stanzas due to overlapping the approaches with each other. The results of the study reveal that the poets used the expressive syntactic approaches, such as the imperative, prohibition, affirmative, and condition to influence on the recipient to convince him to revenge and strike back as discussed by the poetic verses.
