Abstract

This study explores a rhetorical shift from a declarative to an imperative tone in the verse “Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds” from Surah Al-Fatiha. It aims to clarify the criteria by which such a shift can be identified. The research presents various interpretative views: some scholars argue for the rhetorical shift, others maintain a purely declarative reading, while some accept both possibilities. Each opinion is examined along with its supporting evidence. Using a rigorous methodological framework—inductive, descriptive-critical, comparative, and deductive—the study evaluates these perspectives. It highlights the importance of clear criteria in identifying rhetorical shifts and assessing differing interpretations. The study underscores the role of linguistic norms, Quranic context, prophetic traditions, variant readings, and classical Arabic usage, including poetry and prose, in shaping our understanding of such shifts.
