Abstract
Special Education Teachers Attitudes
toward Using Social Stories to Improve Some Social Skills
for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder
Abstract
This study aimed to identify the attitudes of special education teachers towards using social stories to improve some of the social skills of students with autism spectrum disorder. The researcher adopted the descriptive survey method through the use of a questionnaire to collect data (prepared by the researcher). The study sample consisted of (108) male and female teachers. The results of the study showed that, in general, the study sample had positive attitudes towards using social stories with students with autism spectrum disorder, and there were statistically significant differences between the responses of the study sample towards their attitudes in using social stories with students with autism spectrum disorder, due to the variable of prior training on preparing and applying social stories for the benefit of special education teachers who had prior training. The results also revealed more positive attitudes for the study sample, due to those who had previously used social stories. Finally, the results indicated that there were no statistically significant differences in the attitudes of the study sample due to the variable of years of experience. In the light of the results of the current study, a set of recommendations were presented that would concern the need to provide adequate training and support for special education teachers on the preparation, application and use of social stories.
